Makaton Symbols

Makaton is a communication method, commonly used to help Autistic people or children with speech disorders express their wants and needs. It incorporates sounds with symbols and British Sign Language to create visual cues for words. As it becomes more and more common in early years teaching, you may have seen the word ' Makaton ' floating.

Over 100,000 children and adults use Makaton, a language designed to support spoken language with signs and symbols. It uses a unique visual approach to developing communication skills in children and adults, by encouraging sounds and words alongside hand gestures. In many cases, Makaton is used to facilitate talking in early language development.

Makaton signs and signing use a single sign to convey the intent of a short sentence or phrase. The same sign may have more than one interpretation depending on its context, whereas in true sign language, the sign would be amended slightly to show the difference.
